Foreign Languages
Languages are really important. Learning a language makes you think and gets your brain going in different ways; it helps you to understand other people and countries and it can be an advantage if you want to travel or get a job with a multi-national company.
The main skills in learning a language are listening, speaking, reading and writing. These can all be practised in class through a variety of tasks using websites, tapes, pair work, group work, textbooks, workbooks and the pupils’ own vocabulary books and exercise books.
The foreign languages currently on offer at Chanel are as follows :
Y7 taster course in Spanish
Y8 beginners’ course in French
Y9 French (as an option)
Y10 French (as an option)
Y11 French (NCEA Level 1 through Video Conferencing)
Y12/13 Video Conferencing and Correspondence courses
There are lots of good websites, phrase books and dictionaries to help with learning a language. Even just being able to say hello and introduce yourself in someone else’s language means that you are really making an effort to communicate with them.
